Delayed Riverfront Bridge Construction Stirs Controversy in Surat

BJP MLA Kumar Kanani Demands Accelerated Work on the Long-Awaited Project Amidst Rising Traffic Congestion

Delayed Riverfront Bridge Construction Stirs Controversy in Surat

In Surat, BJP MLA Kumar Kanani is publicly expressing concerns over the lackadaisical pace of the riverfront bridge project, which has been causing increased traffic congestion in the area. His outcry is prompted by the fact that even after six months, one side of the boxstring girder of the bridge remains incomplete.

Representing the Varachha Road constituency in Surat, Kanani has raised these issues with the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) officials. The bridge in question is meant to connect Nana Varachha and Mota Varachha, aiming to ease the traffic flow in the area.

In his recent letter to the SMC commissioner, the MLA articulated the distress of the locals suffering from the ongoing traffic woes on the Varachha Main Road due to the delayed bridge work at the Chikuwadi crossing of the Tapi river. This delay, he argues, has resulted in prolonged traffic jams in Chikuwadi, affecting daily commuters.

In an effort to draw attention to the urgency of the matter, Kanani described the progress on the bridge construction as moving at a "snail's pace." He emphasized the need for immediate completion of the bridge to prevent further escalation of traffic issues, especially ahead of any potential mass movement in the region.

Bridgecell, responsible for the bridge work, had previously responded on January 4, 2023, claiming the project was in its final phase and assuring that the remaining work would be completed promptly. However, despite this assurance, the situation remains unchanged six months later, adding to the traffic inconvenience for the local residents.
