Surat Tragedy: Bride Murdered During Pre-Wedding Ceremony by Disapproving Relative
After Court Marriage Against Family's Wishes, Woman is Fatally Attacked Before Formal Wedding Ceremony
In a shocking incident that unfolded in the Limbayat area of Surat, a bride-to-be was brutally murdered by her cousin during a pre-wedding ceremony, a day before her formal wedding. The victim, identified as Kalyani Patil, had previously married her lover in a court, defying her family's opposition. The formal wedding was organized by the groom's family to celebrate the union.
The tragic incident took place in Rameshwar Society near R.D. Gate, where Kalyani's cousin, Monu Patil, attacked her with a knife during the 'Haldi' ceremony, a traditional Indian event that precedes the wedding. Kalyani's injuries were severe, and she tragically passed away before she could be taken to the hospital. Monu was apprehended by locals at the scene and handed over to the police.
The groom, Jitendra Dhagaji Mahajan, resides in Rameshwar Society of Limbayat. The wedding was set to take place on Tuesday, with the turmeric ceremony scheduled a day prior. Monu Patil unexpectedly arrived at the ceremony and attacked Kalyani, causing the festivities to turn into a scene of horror.
Jitendra and Kalyani's love story faced opposition from the start due to their different community backgrounds; Jitendra is from the Mahajan community, while Kalyani belonged to the Patil community. Despite the familial opposition, the couple had been in love for a long time, leading them to court marriage about a month prior.
Following the court marriage, Kalyani moved in with Jitendra's family. The couple had been living together peacefully when they decided to proceed with a formal wedding, hoping to reconcile with Kalyani's family.
The father of the groom, Dhagaji Mahajan, expressed his shock over the horrifying incident. He explained that his son had married Kalyani in court about a month ago and that Kalyani had been living with them since. They had planned to have a traditional wedding ceremony a month after the court marriage, hoping to bypass any possible objections from Kalyani's family.
Following the incident, Limbayat police were promptly informed and arrived on the scene. The police have arrested Monu Patil and initiated a murder investigation into the incident. The tragic end to Kalyani's love story serves as a grim reminder of the dangers that can arise from familial opposition to inter-community relationships.
