Gujarat Transport Department Targets Vehicles Without Number Plates in Major Rule Change

Mandatory Number Plates to be Issued at Showrooms, 'Applied for Registration' Stickers No Longer Accepted

Gujarat Transport Department Targets Vehicles Without Number Plates in Major Rule Change

GUJARAT – The Transport Department of Gujarat announced a major policy shift today, indicating a tough stance on vehicles without number plates starting July 1. In a move aiming to streamline registration and curb traffic violations, showrooms, not RTO offices, will be responsible for issuing number plates to newly purchased vehicles.

Previously, drivers could operate vehicles while waiting for their preferred number plate by displaying a sticker reading "Applied for Registration". This system will be discontinued starting next month, and any vehicles found on the roads without a proper or temporary number plate will face fines as per the traffic act.

However, the department has made provisions for vehicles delivered before the new rules come into effect. Those received before the first week of July will be exempted from penalties.

The execution of the new rule could take up to 15 days post-July 1. A senior department official clarified that the new regulation applies to all kinds of vehicles, including two-wheelers, three-wheelers, cars, goods vehicles, tractors, and other vehicles. The new rule removes the need for physical verification at RTO offices.

Once the vehicle's documents are uploaded, the number plate will be declared. It will then be the showroom dealer's responsibility to affix the number plate onto the vehicle. This move is intended to alleviate the burden on drivers who, under the previous system, had to visit the RTO office to obtain their number plates.
