Near Tragic Incident in Surat: Laborers Collapse in Underground Water Tank

Surat, Udhna – The tranquility of an early morning was shattered in the Udhna district of Surat city when two laborers, engaged in cleaning an underground water tank, fell unconscious due to suffocation. Their lives hung in the balance until fire department personnel intervened, pulling off a timely rescue operation. The men, both in critical condition, are currently receiving treatment at a local civil hospital.

The incident occurred at Shreeji Industries, situated in City Industrial Estate in Udhna, where the cleaning operation was underway early Saturday morning. The two workers, Dineshbhai, 45, and Milanbhai, 24, descended into the approximately 10-feet deep tank, but soon succumbed to suffocation and lost consciousness. Panic ensued among other employees and the contractor present at the scene, prompting an immediate call to the fire department.

Upon receiving the distress call, teams from the Bhestan and Man Darwaja Fire Departments rushed to the site. Grasping the urgency of the situation, two fire department personnel donned breathing apparatus and descended into the water tank. The men were extracted within a critical timeframe, and thanks to the swift response, a potential tragedy was averted.

The laborers, unconscious due to the suffocation, were swiftly transported to the civil hospital by a 108 ambulance service. Medical personnel at the facility reported that both workers are in critical condition.

In the aftermath of the incident, local law enforcement initiated a preliminary investigation. As the two laborers remained unconscious, the task of informing their families fell on the authorities. The police have also conducted an initial inquiry with the contractor and the owner of Shreeji Industries as part of their ongoing investigation.
