Vadodara / Ahmedabad, June 23 (Hindustan Times) - A significant reform is being introduced across Gujarat to streamline the vehicle registration and number allocation process. From July 1, these procedures will be handled directly by the vehicle dealerships instead of the Regional Transport Office (RTO). The new measure even allows customers the option to choose their vehicle's number.
According to JK Patel, the RTO official from Vadodara, recent amendments to the Motor Vehicle Act permit the delegation of number allotment duties to vehicle dealers. Previously, this task, along with the verification and approval processes, were carried out by the RTO. This change is expected to expedite the process of vehicle registration and numbering, eliminating the need for vehicle owners to visit the RTO office.
Dealer-level training on the updated processes has already commenced and will continue in phases over the coming days. This new system comes after the successful implementation of a previous policy, where vehicle number plates were fitted at the dealerships following registration with the RTO. The latest move by the state government further decentralises the registration process, authorising dealers for number allotment as well.
Under the previous system, when a vehicle was purchased, the registration documents were sent to the RTO office for review and approval, a process that could take over a week. The approved number was then relayed back to the dealership for the creation of the High Security Registration Plates (HSRP). This convoluted process led to long wait times, particularly for those choosing a specific number.
Under the revised process, there will be no such delays. Customers will have the opportunity to select their desired number through the dealership's computer system, with the number plate being provided shortly after payment of fees. This more efficient process promises a better buying experience for the vehicle owners across Gujarat.
