Surat municipality to phase out Khajod waste disposal site due to Dream City project
In preparation for the ambitious Dream City project in Khajod, Surat municipality has begun the process of relocating the waste disposal site to Umbhed. The administration will demand over 3.40 lakh square meters of land in Umbhed for public use from the state government. Once the demand has been accepted, the municipality will close the Khajod site in stages. The municipality had submitted a proposal to the Standing Committee to acquire the land, and has corresponded with the collector to ensure approval. The disposal site will be developed in phases from the Khajod site once the government land is obtained.
The move comes as the Surat Municipal Corporation was planning to close the Khajod site and shift it to Umbhed near Kadodara in order to accommodate the Dream City project. The municipality will acquire block no. 197, which covers 3 lakh square meters, as well as another 40 thousand square meters, for the solid waste disposal landfill site. CRA clearance has already been received, and objections have been addressed.
