West Indies wins Test series against Sri Lanka after 23 years, second match ends in a draw
Antigua, July 8. West Indies has claimed the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka 1-0.
The second and final Test match played in Antigua ended in a draw on Tuesday, marking the host team's achievement of winning a Test series against Sri Lanka after 23 years. This is also West Indies' first Test series win since February 2023. After winning the first Test by an innings and a large margin, West Indies led the series 1-0.
In the second match, Sri Lanka attempted to chase victory by scoring quickly on the final day. Captain Dhananjaya de Silva, Sonal Dinesha, and Milan Ratnayake played quick innings, allowing Sri Lanka to declare their second innings at 251/9, setting a target of 362 runs for West Indies. However, in the final session, West Indies openers John Campbell and Brandon King added 109 runs without losing a wicket.
Both batsmen completed half-centuries before both teams agreed to a draw. Earlier, Sri Lanka declared their first innings at 549/9. Lahiru Udara scored 188 runs, Sonal Dinesha made 92, and Kamindu Mendis scored 84 runs.
In response, West Indies scored 499 runs thanks to Justin Greaves' 180 and Shai Hope's 112 runs. For Sri Lanka, Asitha Fernando took five wickets in the first innings.
