Surat Advocate Preeti Joshi Raises Demand for Lawyers' Safety
Surat: Advocate Preeti Jignesh Joshi, a member of the Bar Council of Gujarat (BCG), has called for the effective implementation of the Advocate Protection Act and the establishment of a special monitoring system for the safety of women lawyers, in light of increasing incidents of harassment against lawyers and female advocates across the country. On May 20, 2026, Advocate Preeti Jignesh Joshi and Advocate Deepika Chawda discussed this issue in detail during a meeting at the Bar Council of India (BCI) office in Delhi.
Advocate Preeti Joshi stated through a written presentation that there has been a continuous increase in attacks on lawyers, false cases, and threats over the past few years, creating an atmosphere of insecurity among advocates. She mentioned that when lawyers, considered a crucial pillar of the justice system, do not feel safe themselves, it directly impacts the judicial process. She demanded that the Bar Council of India promptly form a special committee to ensure the effective implementation of the Advocate Protection Act across the country.
Additionally, she called for strong representation before the central and state governments to enforce this law strictly, so that advocates can represent their clients without fear. Expressing serious concern regarding the safety of women lawyers, she demanded the establishment of active and authorized grievance cells at each Bar Association level to prevent mental and physical harassment of female advocates in court premises and chambers. During this time, Advocate Preeti Joshi and Advocate Deepika Chawda also praised Mananbhai Mishra, the Chairman of the Bar Council of India.
They stated that as the country's largest legal institution, the Bar Council of India has always been at the forefront of protecting the interests of advocates. Both advocates expressed hope that a positive decision would be made soon on this issue and effective steps would be taken to ensure the safety of lawyers, especially female advocates.
