Surat: Labor Conference on International Workers' Day, Voices Raised Against New Labor Codes
On the occasion of International Workers' Day, a large labor conference was organized by the Surat District Textile Marketing Transport Labor Union in Rajiv Nagar, Sahara Door. A significant number of workers and labor leaders participated and expressed strong opposition to the new labor codes being implemented by the central government.
Addressing the conference, the president of Gujarat INTUC, Naishadh Desai, stated that the situation of workers in Surat is becoming alarming. He alleged that workers are being made to work for 14 to 15 hours in industrial units, which is severely affecting their health. He also mentioned that most units do not provide adequate safety equipment to workers, leading to fatalities or serious injuries in accidents.
He pointed out that most workers in the city are still deprived of basic facilities such as minimum wage, PF, and ESIC. In such circumstances, workers need to organize and fight for their rights. The spokesperson for the labor union, Shan Khan, stated that the government is abolishing old labor laws under the guise of reform and implementing new labor codes that are anti-worker and in favor of capitalists.
He claimed that the implementation of the new labor codes would weaken fundamental rights of workers, such as union operations and strikes. He called on workers to unite and fight for the protection of their rights.
During the program, 101 women workers were distributed sarees with the support of parcel transport contractors from the textile market. The conference was attended by a large number of workers, including Umashankar Mishra, Saroj Tiwari, Aarti Patel, Dinesh Pandey, Asif Khalifa, and Kailashpati Shukla.
