Surat: Main Accused in SBI Bank Robbery Case Injured in 'Half Encounter', Shot in Leg After Firing at Police

A significant development occurred on Thursday in the sensational robbery case of 50 lakh rupees at the SBI bank located in Varachha, Surat. The main accused, Shubham, attempted to escape by firing at the crime branch team during the recovery of weapons.

In response, police fired back, injuring him in both legs. The injured accused has been admitted to New Civil Hospital under tight police security. According to reports, the Surat crime branch team had reached Kanyasi village in Surat rural with Shubham and his accomplice Vikas, who were on a seven-day remand.

The police were reconstructing the crime scene and recovering the weapons and mobile used in the robbery. During interrogation, Shubham revealed that he had hidden a pistol and mobile near a drain close to a field. While the police were conducting the recovery operation, the accused suddenly snatched the pistol from a police officer and opened fire on the team, causing chaos at the scene.

Sensing the situation, ACP Kiran Modi fired back in self-defense. The police bullets hit Shubham in both legs, causing him to fall injured at the scene. Immediately after the incident, the police took the accused into custody and rushed him to New Civil Hospital for treatment.

Security in the entire area has been heightened, and a detailed investigation is ongoing. Police officials stated that vigilance prevented a major incident and the accused was re-arrested. It is noteworthy that the robbery at the SBI bank in Varachha occurred on April 27, 2026.

Investigations revealed that the mastermind behind this incident is the notorious criminal Kundan Kumar, also known as Kundan Bhagat, who is imprisoned in Beur Central Jail in Bihar. According to the police, Kundan was directing his gang members through a special app while in jail. Kundan Bhagat had previously been involved in the 12 crore rupee Reliance Jewelry heist in Dehradun.

The police had arrested Shubham and Vikas from Uttar Pradesh and brought them to Surat. The investigation also revealed that the gang had surveilled around 10 bank branches in Surat before the incident.

Ultimately, they targeted the SBI branch in Varachha because traffic was relatively low there due to metro construction work. The accused had planned to execute the robbery during the Surat Municipal Corporation elections to take advantage of the police being busy with election duties, allowing them a chance to escape.
