Surat: Illegal Abortion Racket Busted in Varachha Area; 'Mamta Multi-Specialty Hospital' Sealed
A major racket related to illegal abortions and pregnancy testing has been uncovered in the Varachha area of Surat. Following a joint operation by the district health department and police, illegal activities at 'Mamta Multi-Specialty Hospital' were revealed, leading to its sealing.
A case has been registered against the main accused, pharmacist Ramgopal Khandelwal, under the PC-PNDT Act for performing sensitive operations like abortions without being a qualified doctor. Under the leadership of Chief District Health Officer Dr. Anil Patel, the health department team raided the hospital located near Labheshwar Chowk in collaboration with Varachha police.
During the operation, three pregnant women were found admitted, allegedly seeking abortions. This revelation has caused a stir in the medical community. During the investigation, a female staff member present at the hospital admitted that the accused performed surgeries on patients himself, leading to the full disclosure of the case.
The health department immediately halted the ongoing activities at the hospital and referred the patients to Surat Civil Hospital for further treatment. During the raid, a 24-year-old woman escaped, taking advantage of the chaos, while the other two women were admitted to the hospital. The police are actively searching for her.
Preliminary investigations also revealed that the accused had been caught in a similar case before. In 2025, action was taken against a similar racket operating under the name 'Shivay Hospital', resulting in the registration of a case and arrests of the accused and their associates. After being released on bail, he opened a new hospital and resumed illegal activities.
The police have formed separate teams to apprehend the accused and are also investigating who else may be involved in this racket. Officials have stated that strict action will be taken in the case, and the guilty will not be spared.
According to the health department, prompt action was taken following information received from higher authorities. Currently, a detailed investigation is ongoing, and further revelations are expected in the coming days.
