Surat: Controversy over FDY-POY yarns escalates again: Petition in High Court raises concerns in the textile industry
Surat. The synthetic yarn industry is once again in a state of confusion.
Following the central government's decision to lift the BIS/QCO restrictions on FDY (Fully Drawn Yarn) and POY (Partially Oriented Yarn), the issue has now taken a legal turn. The interim stay granted by the Gujarat High Court on a petition filed by some spinners has raised concerns among weavers and knitters in the textile industry. The central government had recently issued a notification exempting these yarns from the applicable BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) and QCO (Quality Control Order).
The aim of this decision was to provide raw materials to weavers and knitters at globally competitive prices, thereby reducing production costs and boosting exports. However, some spinning units challenged this notification in the High Court, seeking the reinstatement of the restrictions. Following the interim relief from the court, this exemption is currently not in effect, creating an atmosphere of uncertainty in the market.
Representatives from the industry have stated that if the restrictions are reinstated, an increase in yarn prices is certain, which would directly exert economic pressure on small and medium-sized weavers. Additionally, there are concerns about irregularities and black marketing in the market. Mayur Golwala, Secretary of the Sachin Industrial Area, mentioned that this situation could significantly impact employment in the textile industry.
He urged the government to intervene and find a prompt solution in favor of the weavers. Experts believe that this matter is extremely important for the MSME sector, as a large number of people in cities like Surat depend on the textile industry. Thus, balancing policy and judicial decisions could pose a significant challenge for the government.
