Surat: The country's first barrier-free toll plaza starts, toll can now be paid without stopping
Surat. For the first time in the country, a barrier-less 'free flow toll system' has been launched in Gujarat.
The Choryasi toll plaza, located near Surat on the Mumbai-Delhi National Highway (NH-48), has now become completely barrier-free, allowing vehicles to pass through without stopping. The implementation of this advanced system will relieve long queues at the toll plaza, saving both time and fuel. A successful trial run of 2 to 2.5 hours was recently conducted, after which it was opened to the public.
According to Project Director Sanjay Kumar Yadav, advanced technology from Taiwan has been used in this system. Vehicles' number plates will be scanned using Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras, and the toll amount will be automatically deducted from the linked FASTag account. This process does not require vehicles to stop anywhere.
The government's goal is to convert over 1,050 toll plazas across the country to similar AI-based barrier-free systems by the end of 2026. This will make the toll collection process completely automated and faster. To provide relief to local drivers, a monthly pass for residents living within a 20-kilometer radius of the toll plaza is available for 350 rupees, and an annual pass for regular commuters is available for 3,075 rupees.
Necessary documents can be submitted to obtain the pass. The Choryasi toll plaza operates a total of 8 lanes, with 4 lanes designated for Mumbai-Ahmedabad and 4 lanes for Ahmedabad-Mumbai. To manage traffic, 32 high-definition CCTV cameras have been installed here.
Approximately 40,000 vehicles pass through this toll plaza daily, benefiting directly from this new technology. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has described this initiative as a step that promotes 'ease of living' and 'ease of doing business'. He stated that it will strengthen the logistics sector, reduce traffic jams, and decrease pollution.
