Surat: Important meeting of the textile industry and DGTS in Pandesara, demand to increase GST rates on steam and reform inverted duty structure
In Surat, a detailed discussion on important issues related to the industry was held during a courtesy meeting organized at SGTPA (South Gujarat Textile Processors Association) in Pandesara. Several significant topics were raised, ranging from taxation to policy reforms, which aimed to enhance communication between the industry and the department.
During the event, Mr. Sumit Kumar, Principal Additional Director General of DGTS (AZU), was welcomed with a bouquet by Mr. Kamalvijay Tulsyan, a representative of SGTPA.
In his address, Mr. Sumit Kumar assured industry representatives that the department is open to suggestions and ready for necessary changes. Officials and members of the managing committee of SGTPA were also present, including Mr.
Jitendra Vakharia and Mr. Vishal Budhia among others. Key issues discussed included GST on CETP operations and maintenance charges, as well as GST on the Emission Trading Scheme (ETS).
Special attention was focused on issues related to the steam house industry, where it was noted that recent changes in GST have created an imbalance in input and output taxes (inverted duty structure). Mr. Vishal Budhia (Steamhouse India Limited) presented that the GST rate on coal has been increased from 5% to 18%, while the GST on steam has been reduced from 12% to 5%.
This change has led the industry to face challenges related to input tax credit (ITC) refunds, working capital blockage, and cash flow issues. Industry representatives demanded that the GST rate on steam be restored to 18%.
Additionally, concerns regarding the impact of GST on ETS were raised, and a plea for relief was made. At the end of the meeting, there was hope that such dialogues would enhance cooperation between the industry and the government department, leading to positive policy decisions in favor of the industry in the future.
