Heavy Drop in Prices Due to Increased Arrival of Alphonso in Mumbai Market
The arrival of Hapus mangoes (Alphonso) in the Mumbai agricultural market has surged, leading to a significant drop in prices, providing great relief to buyers. According to market details, the daily arrival of Hapus has increased to approximately 70,000 boxes.
A large quantity of mangoes is arriving from Ratnagiri, Devgad, Sindhudurg, and Raigad districts of Konkan, as well as from Karnataka and other states. Due to the heavy arrival, the prices of crates have decreased. The price of a box of Hapus mangoes, which was previously sold between 2,000 to 5,000 rupees, has now fallen to 1,500 to 3,000 rupees per box.
Typically, a box contains five to eight dozen mangoes, resulting in a wholesale rate of approximately 190 to 600 rupees per dozen based on quality and size. Traders have noted that currently, about 80 percent of the arriving mangoes are small-sized, as they have been harvested early due to the intense heat. Only 20 percent of the mangoes available in the market are of large size.
The director of the fruit market, Sanjay Pansare, mentioned that the low-priced mangoes in both wholesale and retail markets are of inferior quality. He also stated that the production of mangoes has decreased this year due to unseasonal rains last year.
