Surat: Enthusiasm for Voting Amidst Intense Heat, 53.13% Peaceful Voting, Fate of 483 Candidates Sealed in EVMs
Voting for 120 seats across 30 wards of the Surat Municipal Corporation took place peacefully on Sunday, April 26, 2026. A total of 483 candidates had their fate sealed in EVMs.
Despite the intense heat and a temperature of 41.6 degrees, voter enthusiasm was evident, with approximately 53.13% turnout recorded by 6 PM. This time, the voter turnout percentage was higher compared to the last election. In the 2021 elections, the turnout was 47.14%, while this time over 1.31 million voters out of 2.476 million exercised their right to vote, including 738,000 male and 576,000 female voters.

The highest voting was recorded in areas like Anjana-Dumhal and Limbayat-Udhanayard, while relatively lower turnout was seen in Pune, Karanj, Bhatar, and Vesu Dumus areas. There were also reports of technical issues with EVMs at some locations, which slightly affected the voting process, but the administration quickly managed the situation. Several prominent political and social figures also cast their votes.
Surat District Collector and Chief Electoral Officer Dr. Saurav Pardhi (IAS) voted with the state's Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghvi. MP and Union Minister of Jal Shakti C.R.
Patil also voted with family members and urged people to vote in large numbers. Additionally, city BJP president Paresh Patel and other representatives exercised their voting rights. Many inspiring scenes were witnessed during voting, from a 91-year-old elder to individuals battling serious illnesses, all fulfilling their democratic responsibility.
Some young voters prioritized their civic duty even amidst wedding rituals. First-time voters expressed clear thoughts on issues like development and employment. Young voters working in the IT sector voted with hopes for better job opportunities and work culture.
After voting ended at 6 PM, the EVM machines were sealed and secured. All eyes are now on the election results to be announced on April 28, which will determine the future political direction of Surat.
