Kim Jong Un's 'Destructive' Move Amid Iran War, Cluster Missiles Fired for Second Consecutive Day, US on Alert

Amid rising tensions between Iran and the US, Kim Jong Un surprised the world by testing Hwasong-11 missiles with cluster bomb warheads. His daughter was also present during the monitoring of these deadly missiles.

North Korea has initiated a new series of missile tests amid increasing tensions between the US and Iran and reports of ceasefire violations. On Sunday and Monday, North Korea tested dangerous ballistic and cluster bomb warhead missiles. This month marks the second occasion that Kim Jong Un's administration has tested Hwasong-11 missiles with cluster bomb warheads.

According to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), several ballistic missiles were launched from North Korea's eastern coast on Sunday, which were detected by South Korea, Japan, and the US. The following day, Kim Jong Un oversaw the testing of a missile with cluster bomb warheads. During the missile launch, Kim and his daughter Kim Ju Ae were present and closely observing the missile.

Kim Ju Ae is considered a potential successor to Kim Jong Un. KCNA's statement indicated that Kim supervised the launch of five upgraded Hwasong-11 missiles, which included cluster bombs and fragmentation mine warheads, successfully hitting an island target. Kim described this as significant for enhancing 'high-density attack capabilities' in military operations.

Earlier this month, Hwasong-11 cluster bomb warhead missiles were also used in tests, which can affect an area of 6.5-7 hectares. Experts believe that the Iran war has motivated North Korea to showcase its cluster weapons and accelerate efforts to enhance their capabilities. Cluster bomb warhead missiles explode at height, releasing dozens of smaller bomblets over a large area, making them difficult to intercept.

More than 120 countries have signed an international treaty banning the use of cluster munitions, but North Korea, Iran, Israel, and the US are not among them. Following the failure of nuclear diplomacy with Donald Trump in 2019, North Korea has rapidly worked to enhance its nuclear arsenal and advanced weapons, including multi-warhead nuclear missiles, hypersonic weapons, and submarine-launched ballistic missiles.
