Surat: Municipal Corporation election picture clear, 483 candidates in the fray for 120 seats
The picture of candidates for the municipal corporation elections in Surat has become completely clear. After the deadline for withdrawing nominations, a total of 483 candidates remain in the fray for 120 seats across 30 wards in the city.
During the nomination process for the Local Self-Government Elections-2026, a total of 1059 candidates initially filled out forms. During scrutiny, 561 forms were rejected for various reasons. Subsequently, on the final day, 16 candidates withdrew their names, reducing the total number of candidates to 483.
According to political parties, there are 120 candidates from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), 117 from the Indian National Congress (Congress), and 111 from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), while 135 candidates are independent or affiliated with other parties. This time, the main contest is expected to be triangular among the BJP, Congress, and AAP. Voting for the elections will take place on April 26, and the results will be announced on April 28.
With the final list released, the status of candidates in all wards has become clear, and election campaigning is expected to intensify. As per agency report, the administration has completed preparations for fair and peaceful voting in accordance with the Election Commission's guidelines. Security and arrangements have been strengthened under the code of conduct to ensure that the elections are conducted in a completely transparent and organized manner.
