India's First 500 Megawatt PFBR Achieves Criticality in Kalpakkam: Modi
Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a historic event that the indigenous 500 megawatt prototype fast breeder reactor (PFBR) located in Kalpakkam has achieved criticality, which refers to the controlled chain reaction of the reactor. He stated that India has taken a decisive step in its civilian nuclear journey and advanced its nuclear program's second phase.
The domestically designed and manufactured PFBR in Kalpakkam has achieved criticality. He mentioned that this advanced reactor is now capable of producing more fuel than it consumes, showcasing the depth of India's scientific capabilities and the strength of its engineering skills.
This is a decisive step towards harnessing India's vast thorium reserves in the third phase of the program. He expressed that this is a proud moment for India and congratulated the scientists and engineers.
