Surat: Intense Competition for BJP Tickets in Municipal Elections
Surat, April 3 — Political activity has intensified in Surat ahead of the municipal elections. There is significant competition among Bharatiya Janata Party workers for ticket nominations.
In the last three days, over 2,000 workers have submitted their candidacies for 120 seats across wards 1 to 30. The upcoming municipal elections are scheduled for April 26, with the nomination process set to begin on April 8. The BJP has been collecting applications from candidates over the past three days, a process that concluded on Friday.
According to reports, on April 1, candidates from wards 1 to 12 presented their nominations, followed by wards 13 to 24 on April 2, and wards 25 to 30 on April 3, in front of the party's observers. A large number of workers supported their candidacies during this period. Following the completion of the nomination process, the party has now initiated the selection process.
This involves a coordination meeting attended by MPs, MLAs, and party officials, which ran from morning until late at night, focusing on strategies for candidate selection. Senior leaders, including Surat in-charge and regional general secretary Dr. Prashant Korat, MP Mukesh Dalal, and Prabhu Vasava, were present at the meeting.
Additionally, Gujarat Assembly Deputy Speaker Purnesh Modi and other officials also participated. Sources indicate that a panel of three names is being prepared for each seat in the wards. In the first phase, the eligibility of candidates was assessed, resulting in the exclusion of workers over the age of 60 from the list.
The final selection process will now proceed with the preparation of potential candidates' panels for each ward. The increased competition for tickets indicates that this election is likely to be highly competitive.
