Concerns Over Social Media's Negative Impact on Children Raised in
New Delhi, April 3 — Members of Congress and BJP raised concerns in the Lok Sabha about the harmful effects of social media on children under 16 years of age, demanding a nationwide ban.
Congress member K. Kavya and BJP's Anand Kumar brought this issue to light during zero hour. The Congress MP noted that social media usage is leading to increased stress and depression among children, along with a lack of insight into family relationships and social engagement. Kavya emphasized that social media apps have taken over children's minds, leading them in the wrong direction. She requested the central government to impose a nationwide ban on social media, citing that some states have already implemented such restrictions. She mentioned that other MPs have also suggested similar measures.
Anand Kumar from BJP stated that the uncontrolled and excessive use of social media in today's digital age is increasingly concerning for children under 16. He pointed out that children at this age cannot differentiate between right and wrong, making them susceptible to misleading information, deepfake content, cyberbullying, and inappropriate material. Kumar urged the government to seriously consider regulating social media usage for children under 16, implementing effective age verification systems, and establishing clear guidelines for social media platforms.
