Surat Civil Hospital Witnesses 89th Successful Organ Donation Saving Three Lives
Surat, December 31. The New Civil Hospital in Surat witnessed its 89th successful organ donation today following the heartwarming decision taken by the family of a brain-dead patient. The family of 47-year-old Sambara Kalu Swain, a resident of Olpad, agreed to donate his liver and two kidneys after he was declared brain-dead. This noble gesture is set to provide a new lease of life to three needy individuals.
According to the details available, Swain, who was originally from Sorisamulli in the Ganjam district of Odisha, suffered a fall from the stairs while working at a company in Masma, Olpad, on the night of December 27, 2025. He was immediately rushed to the Surat Civil Hospital via a 108 ambulance. As per agency report, given his critical condition, he was initially admitted to the emergency room and subsequently shifted to the ICU for further treatment.
On the night of December 30, 2025, a medical team comprising RMO Dr. Ketan Nayak, Dr. Nilesh Kachhadiya, Neurologist Dr. Jay Patel, and Dr. Keyur Prajapati declared him brain-dead. The doctors attributed his condition to a severe head injury sustained during the fall. Following this, Dr. Nilesh Kachhadiya, Dr. Ketan Nayak, and Gujarat Nursing Council Vice President Iqbal Kadiwala explained the importance of organ donation to the patient's wife, son, brother, and other family members.
While making the decision, the patient's wife, Suryakanti Swain, and his brothers expressed that there could be no greater act than saving a life and granting someone a new beginning. With these sentiments, the family members consented to the organ donation with a heavy heart. The liver and two kidneys of the deceased were subsequently transported to the IKD Hospital in Ahmedabad.
The entire process was conducted under the guidance of Medical Superintendent Dr. Dharitri Parmar, with significant roles played by doctors, nursing staff, security personnel, and volunteers. Due to the persistent humanitarian efforts at the New Civil Hospital, the year 2025 has recorded 25 successful organ donations, serving as a unique example of the humanitarian values and civic awareness present in Surat.
