Surat Creates History with Four Brain-Dead Organ Donations in Single Day Yielding 18 Organs

Surat, December 9. Surat scripted history on Monday by becoming the first city in India to successfully conduct organ donations from four brain-dead patients in a single day resulting in the donation of eighteen organs. This unique achievement was made possible on the birthday of Dilip Dada Deshmukh the founder of the Organ Donation Janjagriti Charitable Trust who has played a pivotal role in transforming organ donation into a mass movement over the years.

The families of four brain-dead patients admitted to three different hospitals in the city gave their consent for the donations. As per agency report the procedures took place at the New Civil Hospital AAIHMS Hospital in Nana Varachha and Kiran Hospital in Katargam. At the New Civil Hospital the organs of forty-eight-year-old Kailash Ramu Ahire a farm laborer from Dhule Maharashtra were donated including his kidneys liver and corneas. He had been referred to Surat after sustaining severe injuries in a bike accident and was declared brain-dead on the night of December 8 marking the eighty-sixth successful organ donation at the facility.

At AAIHMS Hospital the families of forty-six-year-old Ilaben Manharbhai Prajapati and fifty-five-year-old Manubhai Jerambhai Kacha consented to the donation resulting in the collection of four kidneys two livers and four corneas. Additionally at Kiran Hospital the organs of sixty-eight-year-old Chhaganlal were donated comprising two kidneys one liver and two corneas. The collective consent from these families facilitated the donation of eighteen organs offering a new lease of life to several critical patients.

To mark the occasion and spread the message of service and sensitivity one hundred and fifty-one blankets were distributed to sanitation workers and security personnel at the New Civil Hospital. Peace balloons were also released into the sky to spread the message of organ donation. The event was attended by medical professionals including Dr Ritambhara Mehta Dr Parul Vadgama plastic surgeon Dr Nilesh Kachhadiya Dr Ketan Nayak and Iqbal Kadiwala along with the Nursing Association team. Iqbal Kadiwala stated that their goal is to increase awareness about organ donation and turn it into a mass movement emphasizing that saving a life through collective effort is the highest form of humanity. This achievement serves as an inspirational example not just for Surat but for the entire nation.
