"Cycle to Work" Campaign Kicks off in Surat: A Green Solution to Traffic and Parking Woes
Government and Municipal Employees to Cycle to Work First Saturday of Each Month to Promote Health and Reduce Environmental Impact
In a bid to address environmental concerns and persistent traffic-parking issues, the district administration and Surat Municipal Corporation launched the "Cycle to Work" campaign on Monday. On the first Saturday of every month, government employees in the district, including those from the Municipal Corporation, will ride bicycles to work. The campaign officially begins on June 3rd, when all employees are expected to commute to work by bicycle.
The initiative aims to change the travel habits of government workers, many of whom typically commute to work in private vehicles, even when they live close to their offices. In addition, the influx of visitors and applicants to these offices, who also tend to use private transportation, results in overcrowded parking lots and increased traffic congestion.
The "Cycle to Work" campaign is poised to offer multiple benefits. If government workers switch from private vehicles to bicycles or choose to walk to work, it could contribute to their overall fitness and health. In addition, the initiative could lead to a reduction in air and noise pollution, as well as easing road traffic and congestion.
Ayush Oak, the District Collector, has taken the lead by encouraging employees across all government and semi-government offices in Surat to participate in this initiative. He invites employees to commute by bicycle or on foot on Saturday, June 3, and to document their participation by posting photos on their personal or office social media accounts, in order to raise public awareness and inspire others to consider cycling.
Employees wishing to join the campaign are instructed to register on the Surat Municipal Corporation website (https://www.suratmunicipal.gov.in/) or the Surat Smart City website (www.suratsmartcity.com). They are then encouraged to share their journey via photos or videos on their social media accounts, tagging the Mysurut page of the municipality. Going forward, the District Collector urges all employees to consider cycling to work on the first Saturday of every month.
