Two daily flights now operating from Rajkot to Delhi, international services still awaited
In a major relief for travelers from the Saurashtra region, two daily flights are now operating between Rajkot and New Delhi, significantly improving connectivity between the industrial city and the national capital. With the launch of the new service, passenger traffic at Rajkot International Airport has surged to around 3,000 per day. However, international flights from the newly built airport remain pending despite earlier announcements.
As per report, the newly developed Hirasar International Airport, located about 30 kilometers from Rajkot, is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities but has yet to live up to its “international” status. According to chamber sources, Rajkot, with a population of around two million, houses nearly two lakh small and medium-scale industries. Considering the city’s growing business activity, the addition of a second daily flight to Delhi is expected to provide significant convenience to frequent travelers and business professionals.
Despite these improvements, Rajkot still lacks direct flight services to several key domestic destinations such as Dehradun and Ayodhya. The limited air connectivity forces many passengers to travel to Ahmedabad Airport for their onward journeys, increasing congestion and operational pressure there.
On the international front, services to destinations like London, Dubai, and the United States were initially expected to begin by Diwali 2024. However, even after another festive season has passed, these flights have yet to commence. While immigration and other infrastructure facilities at Rajkot International Airport are reportedly ready, the delay in initiating international operations continues to be a major concern for travelers and the local business community.
