India’s ODI Vice-Captain Shreyas Iyer Hospitalised in Sydney ICU After Rib Injury During Third ODI
New Delhi, October 27 : India’s One-Day International vice-captain Shreyas Iyer has been admitted to a hospital in Sydney and is currently in the intensive care unit (ICU) after suffering internal bleeding caused by a rib injury during the third ODI against Australia.
As per agency report, Iyer sustained the injury while running backward from the backward point region to take a remarkable catch of Alex Carey. It is believed that he hurt his left rib during the attempt and was rushed to the hospital immediately after returning to the dressing room on Saturday.
According to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), scans revealed that Iyer suffered an injury to his spleen. In an official statement issued on Monday, the board said that he had sustained a blow below his left rib cage and was admitted to the hospital for further evaluation. The statement added that his condition is stable and he is recovering under medical supervision.
BCCI further stated that its medical team is closely monitoring Iyer’s condition in consultation with specialists in both Sydney and India. The team’s doctor will remain in Sydney to assess his daily progress.
A source familiar with the development confirmed that Iyer has been in the ICU for the past two days. Internal bleeding was detected following medical tests, which necessitated his immediate hospitalisation. The source added that he will remain under observation for two to seven days to prevent infection risks associated with internal bleeding.
BCCI’s medical team made the decision to admit him after assessing his condition in the dressing room. Team doctors and physiotherapists reportedly took no chances, opting for immediate medical intervention. The source said that while Iyer’s condition is now stable, the situation could have been life-threatening had treatment been delayed.
Initially, Iyer was expected to be out of action for around three weeks, but his recovery could take longer due to the internal bleeding. The source added that it is currently difficult to set a timeline for his return to competitive cricket.
The 31-year-old cricketer will remain in the Sydney hospital for at least a week before being declared fit to return to India. Iyer is not part of India’s T20 squad.
