India Defeat West Indies by Seven Wickets to Complete Test Series Clean Sweep
New Delhi, October 14: India registered a comprehensive seven-wicket victory over the West Indies on the fifth and final day of the second and last Test on Tuesday, completing a 2–0 clean sweep in the series.
As per agency report, chasing a modest target of 121 runs, India resumed their innings at 63 for one on the final morning, needing only 58 more runs to win. The hosts comfortably reached 124 for three in 35.2 overs, with opener KL Rahul remaining unbeaten on 58. His innings, which included six fours and two sixes, guided India to victory. Sai Sudharsan contributed 39 runs, adding 79 for the second wicket with Rahul, while captain Shubman Gill scored 13 and Dhruv Jurel stayed not out on six.
Earlier, India had declared their first innings at an imposing 518 for five, built on brilliant centuries from openers Yashasvi Jaiswal (175) and skipper Shubman Gill (129 not out). In reply, West Indies were bowled out for 248 and forced to follow on. Their second innings saw a resilient fightback led by John Campbell, who scored 115 off 199 balls, and Shai Hope, who made 103 off 214 balls. The duo shared a 177-run partnership for the third wicket, helping the visitors post 390 and extend the match into the fifth day.
India had earlier won the first Test in Ahmedabad inside three days by an innings and 140 runs, underlining their dominance on home soil. This series also marked Shubman Gill’s first as India’s Test captain, making the victory even more special for the young leader.
Left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav was named Player of the Match for taking eight wickets, including a five-wicket haul in the first innings. All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja earned the Player of the Series award for his consistent performances with both bat and ball.
Speaking after the match, captain Shubman Gill said he was gradually getting accustomed to managing the team and acknowledged that leadership often requires bold decisions.
Despite West Indies’ spirited effort, their skipper Roston Chase joined Craig Brathwaite as only the second West Indies captain to lose his first five Test matches. Chase said the team would treat this match as a learning benchmark and work hard to improve from here.
Indian bowlers took all 40 opposition wickets across the two Tests, with the pacers excelling even on unhelpful pitches and the spinners showing patience in testing conditions. Indian batsmen also displayed dominance, scoring five centuries across the series. However, considering the relatively weak West Indian bowling attack, India’s real challenge will come in the upcoming Test series against South Africa.
The clean sweep also earned India crucial points in the World Test Championship standings, further strengthening their campaign for a place in the final.
