Traditional Lippan art from Kutch shines at Saras Mela 2025 in Surat
Surat. An eye-catching stall at Saras Mela 2025 has been drawing special attention for its display of traditional Lippan art, presented by Nashima Banu and her husband Isabhai from Kutch. Giving shape to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Vocal for Local” vision, the couple has turned this centuries-old art form into a means of self-reliance and livelihood.
As per report, Nashima Banu’s journey from Nakhatrana village in Kutch district to showcasing her work in Surat has been nothing short of a dream. Once confined to her home, she now works alongside her husband to create intricate decorative pieces using cow dung, clay, cardboard, and acrylic paints. The products, priced between Rs 50 and Rs 2,500, range from small utility items to elaborate wall decorations.
What began as a craft used only for decorating letterboxes has now evolved into popular products such as wall pieces, tea stands, keychains, and other decorative items that are gaining recognition both in India and abroad. The enthusiastic response they received at the Surat Saras Mela has been described by the couple as a turning point for their artistic journey.
Nashima Banu attributes her success to government support and her husband’s encouragement, which enabled her to step out of her home and expand her work. Through online platforms, their craft is now reaching new audiences, helping preserve and promote their cultural heritage among the younger generation.
The story of Nashima Banu and Isabhai stands as a powerful example of how talent, when given the right opportunities, can empower rural women and contribute meaningfully to the vision of an Atmanirbhar Bharat.
