Gujarat’s First Amrit Bharat Express Flagged Off from Surat to Odisha

Surat: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday virtually flagged off Gujarat’s first Amrit Bharat Express, which will operate weekly between Udhna station in Surat and Berhampur in Odisha. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw launched the train from Udhna station, marking an important milestone in regional connectivity.

As per report, the train will run at a speed of 130 to 160 kilometres per hour and complete the journey in around 30 hours. While it will initially operate on a weekly basis, regular service will begin from October 5, with plans to make it a daily service within the next two months.

The Amrit Bharat Express has been specially designed keeping general class passengers in mind. Its affordable fares have been fixed at Rs 495 for general and Rs 795 for sleeper class, bringing a much-needed travel solution to thousands of Odia families living in Surat who had long been demanding direct rail connectivity to their home state.

The train consists of 22 LHB coaches with engines at both ends, enabling it to maintain high speeds without requiring engine changes. It is equipped with EP brakes that ensure smooth and safe halts, while modern facilities such as CCTV surveillance, charging points and specially designed doors enhance safety and comfort for passengers.

The route will connect major districts across Gujarat, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh and Odisha, thereby boosting both connectivity and development. According to the railway ministry, the train is expected to contribute not only to easier travel but also to social and economic growth in the regions it serves.

For the Odia community in Surat, the launch is a long-awaited relief. During festivals and holidays, travel difficulties had been a recurring challenge, but the new service promises to make journeys simpler and more affordable.

Railway Minister Vaishnaw said that the Amrit Bharat Express represents a step towards providing modern, safe and comfortable travel for the common man. On the same occasion, Gujarat BJP president C. R. Patil also urged for the introduction of a new MEMU train to meet the needs of daily commuters.
