Karnataka truck accident death toll in Hassan rises to nine

Hassan, Karnataka, Sept 13 – The death toll in the tragic accident during a Ganesh immersion procession in Hassan district has risen to nine, police officials confirmed on Saturday. The incident took place on Friday night in Mosale Hosahalli village of Arkalagudu taluk when a truck lost control and ploughed into the crowd.

According to police, the accident occurred after a motorcyclist suddenly came in front of the truck. In an attempt to avoid hitting the two-wheeler, the driver swerved but lost control of the vehicle, ramming it into people participating in the procession. Four people died on the spot, while four others succumbed to injuries later that night in hospital. On Saturday, another injured person died, raising the total fatalities to nine.

As per agency report, the Karnataka government has announced financial assistance for the victims’ families. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah declared that Rs 5 lakh compensation will be provided to the next of kin of those who lost their lives in the accident.

The tragedy has cast a shadow over Ganesh festivities in the region, with authorities stepping up efforts to ensure stricter safety measures during religious processions.
