Woman from Ghaziabad dies after jumping from hotel during Nepal unrest, cremated in India

Maharajganj, Sept 12 – A woman from Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, who was critically injured after jumping from the fourth floor of a hotel in Kathmandu during violent unrest in Nepal, succumbed to her injuries while undergoing treatment. Her husband brought her body to the Sonauli border in Maharajganj district on Friday, officials confirmed.

The couple, Ramveer Singh Gola (58), a transporter from Ghaziabad, and his wife Rajesh Devi Gola (55), had traveled to Kathmandu on September 7 to visit the famous Pashupatinath temple. They were staying at Hotel Hyatt Regency.

According to family members, after completing temple visits and other religious tours, the couple decided to remain in the hotel on September 9 when unrest escalated. Protesters reportedly set the hotel on fire. Panic spread as smoke and flames engulfed the premises, forcing the couple to jump from the fourth floor to save their lives.

Rescue teams had placed mattresses on the ground, which saved them from immediate fatal injuries. However, Rajesh Devi sustained severe wounds and was rushed to a hospital, where she later died during treatment.

As per agency report, Ramveer Singh explained that with curfew imposed and the airport closed, they had no choice but to stay back in the hotel. When violence intensified, they attempted to escape by jumping, which left his wife fatally injured.

The body was transported from Nepal to the Sonauli border on Thursday by ambulance and later brought to the couple’s residence in Master Colony, Nandgram, Ghaziabad. Assistant Commissioner of Police Bhaskar Verma said the cremation took place on Friday afternoon at the banks of the Hindon River around 2:30 pm.

The tragic incident has underscored the risks Indian pilgrims and travelers faced amid widespread violence in Nepal, which has seen curfews, arson, and security clampdowns following political unrest.
