Vadodara Government School Wins ‘Saksham Shala’ Award for Excellence in Cleanliness and Sustainability

Vadodara – The Indiranagar Koyli Government Primary School in Vadodara has been honored with the ‘Saksham Shala’ award at the taluka level for its outstanding work in the areas of cleanliness, environmental conservation, water management, health, safety, energy, and disaster preparedness. The award was presented by the district collector and the district development officer in recognition of the school’s exemplary efforts.

Established in 1985, the school currently educates 329 students up to Class 8, most of whom come from economically weaker sections. Since 2014, under the leadership of Principal Rakesh Patel, the institution has focused on creating a child-friendly and eco-friendly environment. Beyond academics, the school emphasizes sustainable living and environmental awareness. Initiatives such as “One Child, One Plant” ensure that students receive a sapling on their birthday, fostering a culture of care for nature.

The school campus is equipped with vermicomposting units, rainwater harvesting systems, a 3.5 kV solar panel, organic farming areas, and a plastic-free environment. Modern facilities such as smart classrooms, a computer lab, a science laboratory, a library, and an RO-based drinking water system are also in place. Notably, the school has a zero dropout rate, and even students from private schools are seeking admission.

In addition to education, the school promotes personal hygiene by encouraging students to bring soap as birthday gifts, while initiatives like “Ram Haat” allow children to purchase stationery items, and a “Lost and Found” stand teaches responsibility. Compassion is also instilled through arrangements for feeding birds and animals.

At the state level, the school has been recognized by the Samagra Shiksha State Project Office for its climate change activities. Through participation in the HCL Foundation and CEE’s “Generation for Climate Action” (GenCAN) program, students have developed strategies to reduce their carbon footprint.

As per agency report, the school stands as a model for how government institutions can deliver not only quality education but also instill values of environmental consciousness and social responsibility, setting a benchmark for others across Gujarat.
