Textile Ministry to Meet Industry Leaders Next Week Over Trump's Tariff Announcement

New Delhi, August 3 — Union Textile Minister Giriraj Singh is scheduled to meet key stakeholders from the textile industry next week to assess the potential impact of U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent announcement of a 25% tariff on Indian textile imports, sources revealed.

The United States remains India’s largest market for textile and apparel exports, accounting for nearly 25% of the sector’s total outbound shipments. The meeting will focus on strategies to mitigate the effects of the proposed tariff hike.

According to sources, the discussion will also cover the potential benefits of the recently signed UK-India Free Trade Agreement (FTA), particularly in boosting India’s textile exports to the UK market.

Government and industry players are keen to leave no stone unturned in achieving the ambitious goal of $100 billion in textile exports by 2030. The meeting will provide a platform to explore policy support and diversification strategies in light of the new U.S. tariff scenario.

“While it’s premature to discuss specific measures in response to the U.S. announcement, the government is seeking industry feedback,” a source said. “We also aim to explore challenges and opportunities in untapped markets, especially under the UK-India FTA.”

Sources added that Minister Singh has personally called for this meeting, which will include major apparel exporters and associations. The dialogue is expected to center on both short-term risks and long-term growth strategies for the Indian textile sector.
