New Shri Ram Textile Market in Surat Continues to Thrive as a Hub for Traditional Apparel Trade

Surat, July 7 – Located in the Salabatpura extension on Ring Road, the New Shri Ram Textile Market has maintained a distinctive position in the city’s vibrant textile industry. Established nearly 25 years ago, the market has become especially known for its wholesale and retail trade in dress materials, suits, dupattas, lehengas, and traditional chaniya-cholis. It currently houses a total of 107 shops, actively catering to both wholesale and individual customers.

Speaking to Loktej, Harjeet Singh Makija, who has been associated with the market for the past two decades and currently serves as the market’s president, emphasized the strength of traditional trade. His firm, Tanish Textile, operates extensively across major states such as Gujarat and Maharashtra. Makija, who remains a firm advocate of offline business, believes that traders should avoid transitioning to online platforms whenever possible to maintain direct relationships and trust-based transactions.

To ensure smooth functioning, a four-member management committee oversees the market operations. The committee comprises Harjeet Singh Makija as President, Tekchand Prachani as Vice President, Hemchandra Gandhi as Secretary, and other supporting members.

Dilip Sahu, the proprietor of Venus Fabric, also shared his perspective with Loktej. Having been in business for over 25 years, he specializes in wholesale and retail trade of chaniya-cholis and lehengas. His business network spans several Indian states, including Rajasthan, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Chhattisgarh. Like Makija, Sahu also relies entirely on offline trade, underscoring the continued relevance of traditional business models in the textile sector.

From a safety standpoint, the market has installed CCTV surveillance systems, deployed security guards, and implemented fire safety measures. These arrangements help ensure a secure environment for both traders and shoppers, contributing to the market’s reliable and customer-friendly reputation.

New Shri Ram Textile Market stands as a testament to the enduring strength of Surat’s textile legacy, where traditional garments and time-tested business practices continue to flourish in a modern and secure setting.
