Surat : Organ Donation by Navsari Youth Saves Three Lives, Sets Milestone at Surat’s New Civil Hospital

A selfless act by a young man from Navsari has brought new life to three patients in need, marking a significant milestone in organ donation at Surat’s New Civil Hospital. The 29-year-old Aakash Rathod, a resident of Sundarpur Dham Faliya in Navsari taluka, became the 71st organ donor at the hospital, making it the leading center for organ donations in brain-dead cases in the region.

The incident occurred on June 30 when Aakash Rathod was traveling by motorcycle in Navsari and collided with a cow, resulting in severe head injuries. He was immediately rushed to MGG Hospital for treatment. Despite medical efforts, he was declared brain dead, and the family was soon approached by the State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (SOTO) team.

As per agency report, Dr. Nilesh Kachhadia from SOTO, RMO Dr. Ketan Nayak, and Gujarat Nursing Council Vice President Iqbal Kadiwala played a crucial role in counseling the family. They explained the significance of organ donation in detail, and the Rathod family responded with grace and compassion, agreeing to donate Aakash’s organs to help others live.

With the consent of Aakash’s father Bhagubhai, mother Kamuben, and brother Lalubhai, the organ donation process was initiated. Both kidneys and the liver were transported to the Institute of Kidney Diseases and Research Centre (IKDRC) in Ahmedabad, where they will be transplanted into patients in urgent need.

Under the guidance of New Civil Hospital’s medical superintendent Dr. Dharitri Parmar, the entire team—comprising medical and nursing staff, security personnel, sanitation workers, and dedicated volunteers—worked diligently to ensure the success of the organ donation process. This inspiring act of generosity not only saved lives but also highlighted the growing awareness and humanity surrounding organ donation in Gujarat.
