Surat Metro Project Nears Key Milestone with Completion of Underground Tunnel Section
The Surat Metro Rail Project is progressing at a rapid pace, bringing significant updates for residents of the Kot area. One of the most awaited developments—the underground tunnel connecting Kapodra to Chowk Bazaar—is now nearing completion. This tunnel is a crucial part of the city's first metro corridor aimed at easing urban transit.
According to metro officials, both the up and down lines of the underground tunnel between Kapodra and Surat Railway Station have been fully constructed. Meanwhile, the work on the tunnel section between Surat Railway Station and Chowk Bazaar is currently underway. It is expected that one of the lines will be completed by the end of July, while the second line is projected to be finished by December 2025, as per report.
On the elevated sections of the metro route, track-laying activities have commenced in a phased manner. A stretch of 750 meters of track has already been laid on the route passing through Althan village and the Althan Tenement area. Preparatory work for track installation has also been completed near the Sarathana viaduct, and track-laying will soon begin at that location as well.
In addition to the metro rail infrastructure, affordable housing projects for economically weaker sections (EWS) are also being planned at select metro station sites in the city. This idea was discussed during a coordination meeting held in December last year, where it was proposed to develop housing facilities at two metro stations and request space from the municipal authorities for parking and other essential amenities.
It has now been confirmed that tenders have been issued for the construction of EWS housing at the Aquarium and Model Town metro stations. Each of these residential buildings will be seven stories tall, with a plan to build 168 housing units at each site. This initiative is expected to address the city's growing housing needs while integrating urban development with the metro expansion.
