PM Modi Pays Tribute to Shri Narayana Guru, Calls Him a Beacon for an Inclusive India

New Delhi, June 24 — Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday paid rich tributes to Shri Narayana Guru at an event held in Vigyan Bhawan, calling him a great source of inspiration for India’s collective goals of development. He said that the spiritual reformer's teachings continue to guide the government in making decisions for the upliftment of the marginalized and oppressed.

The occasion marked the centenary celebration of the historic meeting between Shri Narayana Guru and Mahatma Gandhi — a dialogue that PM Modi described as a defining moment for India’s freedom movement and for building a harmonious society. Present at the event were Brahmarshi Swami Satchidananda, Swami Shubhanga Nanda of the Shivagiri Mutt, Swami Shardananda, Union Minister George Kurian, and MP Adoor Prakash.

“Today, this venue bears witness to an extraordinary historical moment. A century ago, the meeting between Shri Narayana Guru and Mahatma Gandhi not only gave new direction to the freedom movement but also defined the purpose of independent India. Even today, their values continue to inspire our path towards a developed and inclusive nation,” the Prime Minister said.

Referring to the enduring legacy of Shri Narayana Guru, PM Modi stated, “His ideals are a priceless treasure for humanity. For those committed to serving society, Shri Narayana Guru is like a lighthouse showing the path of righteousness.”

He added, “Being closely connected to the underprivileged sections of society, I recall the Guru’s teachings every time we make significant decisions for their welfare.”

Highlighting the social conditions a century ago, Modi noted how people were reluctant to speak against entrenched social evils due to centuries of colonial rule. “But Shri Narayana Guru was fearless. His faith in equality, harmony, and service empowered him to challenge those injustices. His message still guides us through the principle of ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas’.”

PM Modi shared his personal connection with the Shivagiri Mutt, recalling past visits and experiences. He recounted how, in 2013 during the Kedarnath disaster, the Mutt placed their trust in him — then Chief Minister of Gujarat — to rescue trapped devotees and saints. “The Mutt did not contact the central government. They entrusted me with the task, and by the grace of God, we were able to bring everyone back safely,” he said.

In conclusion, the Prime Minister reiterated that the values of Shri Narayana Guru remain relevant even today, serving as moral and spiritual foundations for building a united and empowered India.
