Surat Zoo Implements Measures to Protect Animals from Escalating Summer Heat
Increased Water Supply, Coolers, and Water Fountains Introduced to Ensure Animal Comfort and Activity
SURAT — As summer temperatures continue to rise, Surat's municipal zoo has launched a series of initiatives to ensure the wellbeing of its resident animals, including leopards, lions, tigers, and bears.
With mercury levels reaching around 38 degrees and predicted to rise further, the impact of the heat has been noticeable, affecting both humans and animals. According to zoo reports, the food intake of the predators has dropped by around 10%, while their water consumption has significantly increased.
The summer heat usually results in a decrease in animal activity, with most preferring to stay within the cooler confines of their cages. However, new measures introduced by the zoo have been successful in keeping the animals active, allowing visitors to observe them even during the hotter afternoon hours.
Dr. Rajesh Patel, the Zoo Superintendent, explained that the zoo has installed coolers in the enclosures of lions and tigers to provide relief from the heat. Additionally, water fountains have been set up not only in predator cages but also in the bird enclosures, helping to maintain a cooler environment and stimulate activity.
"These special arrangements are necessary for those animals that are particularly susceptible to the summer heat," said Dr. Patel. "We are committed to ensuring their comfort and well-being, and these measures also provide our visitors with the opportunity to see these animals in action, despite the high temperatures."
As the zoo continues its efforts to provide a safe and comfortable environment for its inhabitants, it remains a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, even amidst the heat of the summer season.
