Modi Confirms Participation in G7 Summit Following Invitation from Canadian PM Carney
New Delhi, June 6 – Prime Minister Narendra Modi has confirmed his participation in the upcoming G7 Summit to be held later this month in Canada, following a formal invitation from newly-elected Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. This will mark Modi’s sixth consecutive attendance at the summit of the world’s most advanced economies.
As per agency report, Carney extended the invitation during his first telephone conversation with Modi on Friday. The gesture is being viewed as a potential sign of Canada’s intent to reset strained diplomatic ties with India following last year's tensions over the killing of a Khalistani separatist.
During their phone conversation, both leaders acknowledged the deep people-to-people ties between India and Canada and reaffirmed their commitment to work together with renewed vigor based on mutual respect and shared interests. Modi expressed his eagerness to meet Carney in person at the summit, which will take place from June 15 to 17 in Kananaskis, Alberta.
On social media platform X, Modi congratulated Carney on his recent electoral victory and thanked him for the G7 invitation. He reiterated that India and Canada, as vibrant democracies with strong cultural ties, would collaborate with renewed enthusiasm underpinned by mutual respect.
There had been growing speculation regarding Modi’s participation in the summit due to the delay in the official invitation. However, his confirmation has reaffirmed India’s continued engagement with the G7 forum, which includes the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and Canada.
With Canada currently holding the presidency of the G7, the summit is expected to focus on pressing global issues, including the Russia-Ukraine war and developments in the Middle East. Modi’s participation is likely to further enhance India’s strategic dialogue with the world's most advanced economies amidst evolving geopolitical dynamics.
