Belgium Square in Surat: A 24x7 Commercial Powerhouse and a Symbol of India’s Textile Trade

Located in the Mahidharpura area of Surat, Belgium Square has emerged as one of the city’s most prominent textile markets, drawing traders from across the country. Originally established in 1992 as a hub for diamond merchants, the market has since transformed into a bustling center for sarees, suits, shirting fabrics, and a variety of commercial activities.

The multi-storey complex houses 812 shops and over 150 offices, spread from the ground floor to the ninth floor. Beyond textile trading, Belgium Square is home to a wide range of services including restaurants, banks, stationery outlets, electronics shops, printing machinery stores, auto parts vendors, and computer centers, making it a self-sufficient business ecosystem.

President Khem Singh Rathore

Speaking to Loktej, market president Khim Singh Rathore explained that Belgium Square is divided into two sections and originally served diamond traders before evolving into a broader commercial center. Its close proximity to the railway station and bus stand adds to its appeal for traders, who also benefit from the availability of food and lodging facilities within the market itself. Hotels such as Golden Plaza (fourth floor) and Lord Plaza (tenth floor) offer convenient accommodation for visiting businessmen.

Offices from the third to the ninth floors are heavily occupied by agents and brokers, facilitating massive trade volumes worth billions of rupees annually, with representation from various states across India.

Belgium Square holds the distinction of being the first market on Surat’s Ring Road to operate 24 hours a day, giving it a unique status as a residential market as well. The premises are equipped with comprehensive security arrangements including CCTV cameras, security personnel, and fire safety systems.

Thanks to its strategic location, multi-functional commercial environment, round-the-clock operations, and robust security infrastructure, Belgium Square has earned a distinguished place on Surat’s business map.
