Diu Becomes India’s First District to Meet Entire Power Demand Through Solar Energy
New Delhi, May 29 – Diu has achieved a remarkable milestone by becoming the first district in India to fulfill its entire daytime electricity demand using solar energy. With a total installed solar capacity of 11.88 megawatts, Diu has set a benchmark in the adoption of renewable energy solutions across the country.
Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, highlighted Diu’s success during his visit to the district on Thursday. He stated that Diu now stands as a national example in the transition to clean energy, as its full power requirement during the day is met through solar power. As per agency report, the minister also reviewed the implementation of the PM-Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana and assessed the district's progress in adopting solar energy solutions.
During a high-level meeting with senior officials of the Union Territory, Joshi evaluated the current solar power generation status, the supply infrastructure, and the potential for future expansion. He noted that the capital investment made over the past decade in Diu’s renewable energy infrastructure has already been recovered through solar energy production and distribution.
The minister urged for the faster and more efficient implementation of the PM-Surya Ghar scheme across the Union Territory, ensuring that residents continue to benefit from affordable and sustainable electricity. Diu’s achievement underscores the transformative potential of solar power in reducing dependence on conventional energy sources and promoting environmental sustainability.
