Satish Raj Goravigere awarded for journalism efforts in Karnataka

Bengaluru: Kannada journalist Satish Raj Goravigere was recently presented with the Outstanding Media Contributor of the Year – 2024 award by the Karnataka Media & Communications Forum (KMCF) for Karnataka Region. The award ceremony took place during a media roundtable organised in Bengaluru, drawing participation from several regional media professionals and educators.

Satish Raj was recognised for his sustained contribution to Kannada-language digital journalism, with particular focus on his consistent coverage of civic matters and community-driven stories. The KMCF organisers noted that his efforts have helped strengthen public access to regional reporting, especially through digital mediums.

The selection panel highlighted his work through Kannada News Today, a digital platform Satish Raj Goravigere founded in March 2019. The site focuses on day-to-day local developments, administrative matters and public interest issues from across Karnataka. Over the years, it has emerged as a reliable source of hyperlocal news, reaching audiences beyond urban centres.

Apart from his editorial work, Satish Raj has engaged in mentoring young journalists and supporting regional content creators. He has been associated with training workshops and collaborative projects that aim to expand ethical and language-based journalism in the state. Organisers mentioned that this contribution to capacity building in regional media was a key consideration in the award decision.

The event also featured a panel discussion on challenges and opportunities in Kannada journalism, with speakers addressing the growing importance of digital-first reporting in regional languages. Attendees included journalists from across Karnataka, journalism faculty members and representatives from independent news platforms.

This isn’t the first time Satish Raj Goravigere has been acknowledged for his media efforts. In 2023, he received the Rajyotsava Journalism Honor from the Janapada Sahitya Mattu Patrika Vedike, awarded during Karnataka Rajyotsava celebrations in Bengaluru. That recognition was based on his work in increasing the presence of Kannada news content online and engaging regional audiences through digital storytelling.

As digital platforms continue to shape the media landscape in Karnataka, this recognition highlights the growing significance of independent, local-language journalism in informing communities and supporting linguistic diversity in media.
