CSK Coach Stephen Fleming Accepts Team Deserved Last-Place Finish in IPL, Promises Stronger Return

New Delhi, May 21 – Chennai Super Kings head coach Stephen Fleming has admitted that his side’s performance in the current Indian Premier League season was far from satisfactory and acknowledged that the team deserved to finish at the bottom of the table. As per agency report, following a six-wicket defeat to Rajasthan Royals on Tuesday, CSK’s chances of avoiding the last-place finish have all but evaporated, marking a rare low for the five-time champions.

Fleming, known for his composed leadership, stated that while the team does not like to see itself at the bottom, the results this season reflected the quality of cricket they played. He added that their goal was to deliver improved performances in the last two matches, but with just one game remaining, the focus now shifts to planning for the future.

Reflecting on the shortcomings, the former New Zealand captain emphasized that the failure of the top-order batsmen was a key factor that derailed CSK’s campaign. He confirmed that the management already has a solid strategy for the next season and will be working across all departments to rebuild a stronger side.

Fleming pointed out that the team was unable to consistently get good starts, which affected their overall momentum. He noted that while there were flashes of brilliance in parts, they lacked the collective strength required to stay competitive throughout the season.

On a positive note, he praised young pacer Anshul Kamboj for his promising performances, highlighting his pace around 138–139 km/h and his effective use of length, even on flat pitches. Kamboj’s selection for India A’s upcoming tour of England was also welcomed by the coach, who believes the seamer’s attributes will be well-suited to English conditions known for seam and swing.

Despite the disappointing season, Fleming reassured fans that CSK will return with renewed energy and robust planning, aiming to reclaim their dominant presence in future IPL editions.
