Surat: Doctors at Diamond Hospital Save 3-Year-Old Girl Who Swallowed Coins
Surat, May 19 – In a swift and life-saving medical intervention, doctors at Surat’s Diamond Hospital successfully removed two coins lodged in the food pipe of a three-year-old girl named Manvi Sarjeet Rai, who accidentally swallowed them while playing at her home in Kapodara area. The coins, of one and two rupees denomination, had become stuck in her esophagus, causing severe pain and difficulty in swallowing.
As per report, the incident occurred around 8:30 PM on Sunday. Initially, the child was rushed to a private hospital, where X-rays confirmed the presence of foreign objects in her throat. However, the estimated cost of treatment ranged from ₹30,000 to ₹35,000—an amount her financially constrained family could not afford. The family then brought her to Diamond Hospital, which is managed by the Surat Diamond Association and known for providing affordable emergency care.
At Diamond Hospital, the emergency medical team, including a gastroenterologist, anesthetist, and operating theatre staff, acted without delay and conducted an endoscopy procedure. Within 20 minutes, both coins were safely extracted from the child's esophagus.
Thanks to the timely and efficient care, Manvi showed rapid improvement and was discharged the very next day, on Monday. Her parents expressed deep gratitude to the doctors and hospital staff, stating that the affordable and prompt treatment likely saved their daughter's life.
This incident underscores the critical importance of vigilant child supervision, as seemingly minor negligence can turn dangerous in moments. It also highlights the vital role institutions like Diamond Hospital play in providing life-saving care to low and middle-income families.
