Rajkot’s Veraval Gram Panchayat Sets an Example with Late-Night Public Services
Rajkot, May 19 – In a remarkable move setting a new standard for grassroots governance, the Veraval Gram Panchayat in Kotda Sangani taluka of Rajkot district has earned widespread attention for its innovative initiative of remaining open late at night to serve its residents. Unlike typical government offices that operate from 10:30 AM to 6:10 PM, the Veraval Panchayat remains functional until 10:30 PM, specifically to benefit laborers and farmers who are unable to access services during regular hours.
As per agency report, Veraval's Sarpanch Ravirajsingh Jadeja shared that the village hosts numerous small-scale industries employing a large workforce. To ensure these working citizens receive timely support, the Panchayat extended its operational hours into the night. Currently, between 2,000 and 2,500 villagers benefit from these services every month.
To make public grievance redressal more accessible, the Panchayat has introduced helpline numbers (97122, 99298), enabling citizens to lodge complaints via WhatsApp by sending photos, videos, or messages. The Panchayat not only addresses these concerns promptly but also follows up with complainants for feedback before closing each case.
Veraval Panchayat has also achieved the top spot in Rajkot district for the implementation of e-Shram cards, with 3,816 cards issued so far. These are printed in color, laminated, and distributed directly to the beneficiaries. Furthermore, the Panchayat has become the first in the region to complete e-KYC for 4,942 ration cards.
In support of education, the Panchayat has distributed stainless steel plates and spoons to 2,480 students studying in six primary schools in the village. Citizens who pay municipal taxes have also been provided with dual waste bins to separate wet and dry garbage, reinforcing hygiene and sanitation efforts.
According to the Sarpanch, the village now has 11,000 tap water connections, ensuring safe drinking water for every household. Additionally, under the slum electricity connection scheme, more than 4,500 households have received power connections.
The new Panchayat building was inaugurated on March 7, 2024, by Minister Sonia Gandhi and Bhanu Ben Babaria. On the same day, the Panchayat passed a resolution allowing talatis and staff to work extended hours in shifts. Talati Parag Vasoya confirmed that the office continues operations both in the morning and during the night.
A dedicated team of five operators works tirelessly to ensure smooth functioning. The Sarpanch emphasized that the success of the night service is largely due to the active participation and cooperation of the villagers themselves.
Veraval Gram Panchayat’s model showcases how innovation in local governance, combined with a strong sense of public service, can significantly improve the lives of rural citizens. From ensuring timely administrative support to enhancing access to essential services, Veraval is not just a village that speaks — it is a village that stays awake and thrives for its people.
