Suniel Shetty Opens Up About Initially Rejecting 'Border', Reveals Why He Eventually Agreed

Mumbai, May 19 – Bollywood action star Suniel Shetty, known for his powerful roles in 90s blockbusters like Balwaan, Mohra, Dhadkan, Krishna, Border, and Hera Pheri, has once again captured headlines with his upcoming film Kesari Veer, set to hit theatres on May 23. As part of the promotional campaign, the veteran actor shared several intriguing insights about his career and personal experiences during a recent interview.

One of the most striking revelations was related to his iconic film Border (1997), directed by J.P. Dutta. As per agency report, Shetty revealed that he initially refused to be part of the film. At the time, he had heard that Dutta was a strict director known for his temper and harsh words, which clashed with Shetty’s own fiery temperament during those years. When Dutta approached him, Shetty candidly told him they could speak later, and even informed his secretary that he might not take up the role, fearing that any confrontation could escalate.

However, circumstances changed. Dutta, determined to cast Shetty, reached out to producer Bharat Shah, who happened to know Shetty’s mother-in-law. Through this personal connection, the film offer came back to him, and Shetty decided to set aside his initial apprehensions. He agreed to the project, which eventually became one of the most memorable performances of his career.

Shetty also shared that this incident marked the beginning of a close bond with J.P. Dutta, who later cast him in several films, even during tough times. Their professional relationship evolved into a personal friendship, built on mutual respect and understanding.

Directed and written by J.P. Dutta, Border was based on the 1971 India-Pakistan war and featured a stellar cast including Sunny Deol, Jackie Shroff, Akshaye Khanna, Sudesh Berry, and Puneet Issar. The film remains one of the most celebrated war dramas in Hindi cinema and a cornerstone of Suniel Shetty’s filmography.
