Gujarat: Three Workers Die After Inhaling Toxic Gas During Septic Tank Cleaning in Ahmedabad
Ahmedabad, May 16 – In a tragic incident in Gujarat’s Ahmedabad city, three workers lost their lives on Friday after being exposed to toxic gas while cleaning a septic tank at a factory site. The incident occurred in the Danilimda area, where the laborers had been assigned to clean an underground septic tank at a jeans-washing unit.
According to Assistant Commissioner of Police Y A Gohil, the deceased workers have been identified as Prakash Parmar, Vishal Thakor, and Sunil Rathva. Preliminary investigations revealed that as soon as one of the workers entered the tank, he was overcome by toxic fumes and lost consciousness. His two companions subsequently entered the tank to assist him but also became unconscious due to suffocation.
The factory, which had been shut for some time, was in the process of being restarted by its owner, who had contracted the cleaning work to a private contractor. As per agency report, none of the three workers were provided with safety gear or protective equipment before entering the tank, which significantly contributed to the fatal outcome.
All three individuals were rushed to a hospital, where doctors declared them dead on arrival. Their bodies have been sent for postmortem examination.
Authorities have confirmed that a case will be filed against the factory owner and the contractor under charges related to causing death by negligence, due to the failure to ensure basic safety measures for the workers involved in hazardous cleaning work.
