Woman Killed in Rajkot After Resisting Rape Attempt; Accused Arrested
Rajkot, May 14 – A 53-year-old nurse was allegedly murdered at her residence in Rajkot city after she resisted an attempted rape, police officials said on Wednesday. The accused has been arrested.
As per agency report, the incident occurred around midnight on Tuesday in the Rishikesh Nagar locality of the city. The accused has been identified as 34-year-old Kanji Vanja, who lives in the same neighborhood.
According to Assistant Police Commissioner B.J. Chaudhary, the victim was employed as a nurse at a government-run cancer treatment center. She had recently been transferred from Ahmedabad and was living alone in a rented house.
Police said that around 12:45 AM, Vanja allegedly entered the woman’s home with the intent to assault her. The victim attempted to defend herself with a knife, managing to injure the accused on his hands and legs.
However, during the struggle, Vanja reportedly snatched the knife from her and stabbed her in the chest, leading to her death on the spot.
Chaudhary noted that the victim and the accused had never interacted before. During interrogation, Vanja confessed to the crime and revealed that he committed the murder after the woman resisted his rape attempt.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing, and police are collecting further evidence.
