No Need for Panic Buying: Indian Oil Assures Public of Adequate Fuel Supplies Amid Border Tensions
New Delhi, May 9 – Amid rising tensions between India and Pakistan, the Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), the country’s largest oil company, on Friday assured citizens that there is no shortage of petrol, diesel, or LPG across the country and urged the public to refrain from panic buying.
As per agency report, IOC issued the statement after videos and posts circulated on social media showing long queues at petrol pumps, especially in border states, suggesting that people were rushing to stock up on fuel fearing potential shortages due to the ongoing military conflict.
In a message posted on social media platform X, IOC stated, “Indian Oil has adequate fuel stocks across the country, and all our supply lines are operating smoothly. There is no need for panic buying. Fuel and LPG are available at all our outlets.”
Following Pakistan’s attempted drone and missile strikes across the western border on the night of May 8–9, several cities in Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab underwent temporary blackouts as a precautionary measure. While the Indian Army confirmed that these attacks were “effectively neutralized,” the public reaction led to heightened anxiety, prompting large crowds at fuel stations.
Particularly in areas bordering Pakistan, residents reportedly began purchasing fuel in bulk, fearing a disruption in supplies. To address these concerns, IOC urged citizens to remain calm and avoid creating unnecessary congestion at fuel stations. “By staying calm and avoiding panic-driven rushes, you help us serve you better and ensure smooth and uninterrupted fuel distribution for everyone,” the company stated.
The security alert follows a string of military actions, including India’s recent retaliation under ‘Operation Sindoor’, in which missile strikes targeted nine terrorist hideouts in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Pakistan’s failed attempt to target military installations in Jammu and Pathankot on Thursday night further intensified concerns among the public.
Despite the geopolitical strain, IOC emphasized that its distribution network remains unaffected and fully functional, reinforcing confidence that essential fuel supplies will continue without disruption.
