Taxi Driver Dies After Alleged Beating by Mob Following Multiple Collisions in Ahmedabad
Ahmedabad, April 16 – A 35-year-old taxi driver died in Ahmedabad on Tuesday night after allegedly being beaten by a group of people following a series of road accidents caused by his vehicle. The incident occurred in the city's Juhapura locality, and police have taken five to six individuals into custody for questioning, as per agency report.
According to police officials, the deceased, identified as Kaushik Chauhan, was reportedly driving under the influence when his taxi collided with several vehicles on the road. The sequence of crashes triggered public anger, prompting a group of local residents to chase and eventually intercept him in the Juhapura area, which is known for its minority population.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 7) Shivam Verma stated that Chauhan was allegedly driving recklessly and caused multiple accidents along the way. Upon learning about the series of collisions, several people pursued his taxi, eventually catching up with him in Juhapura, where an altercation ensued. Shortly afterward, police found Chauhan dead near the bonnet of his vehicle.
An officer from Vejalpur Police Station reported that the body was discovered around 9 PM on Tuesday night and was immediately sent for a post-mortem examination. However, authorities have yet to confirm whether Chauhan died due to the physical assault or from another cause. The post-mortem report is awaited to determine the exact reason for his death.
Inspector Ranjeet Singh Chauhan of Vejalpur Police said investigations are ongoing and that it is too early to definitively state that the mob caused the driver’s death. Police are currently reviewing CCTV footage from the area and have summoned individuals captured in the footage for questioning.
A formal case has been registered in connection with the incident, and authorities are working to piece together the sequence of events that led to the tragic outcome.
